FAQ

Where are you?

The hall is located at the end of Harris Road, Normanhurst. Please park on the street and walk down the drive. This is a safety issue as the drive is narrow and there are always a lot children running up and down the drive on scout nights.

How much is it?

Annual fees cover from 1 April to 31 March the following year. The annual fee this year will be between $330-$350. Most of the funds go towards insurance for the kids and equipment for activities. If you decide to join you’ll be issued with an invoice by our group treasurer (Bob). You can claim the active kids rebate from the government when you join scouts.

Can I attend the camps or outings?

If you wish to regularly attend scout activities, and especially overnight events, you’ll need to complete an A2 parent helper form (which includes completing a Working With Children Check) – we take the care of our scouts very seriously.  A2 forms for parent helpers are completed online here:  https://www.nsw.scouts.com.au/for-parents/become-an-adult-helper/

I’d also encourage you to be a part of the scouting community to whatever extent you are comfortable with, and participate in what you can, whether it be as a helper, on the parent committee, or helping with transport.  We’re all volunteers and we do this for our kids, because we want to make a difference in their lives and it is fun. Helping out is great opportunity to get to know the leaders better and meet other parents; all those strange people your children keep talking about.

How do I apply?

To join you’ll need to fill in a Y1 application form. This is an online system but for the first night the leader just needs your phone number and to be aware of any medical issues / allergies. It would be helpful if you could write this down on a piece of paper and hand it to the leader at the start of the meeting. The link to the online registration is www.nsw.scouts.com.au/for-parents/newyouthmember

Normanhurst Scout Group has a facebook page that we encourage you to join if you decide scouting is for your child.

What else do I need to do?

In addition to fees the group holds a number of fundraising activities during the year. This is usually in the form of a Bunnings BBQs, selling Christmas trees, helping in the community, etc.

Fundraising has two purposes. The first is to raise money to buy more equipment and reduce the fees. The second, and more important reason, is that it provides a learning and development opportunity for the scouts. By participating in fundraising the scouts are contributing to the group and learning to help support themselves (although for Joeys and Cubs the parents need to accompany them, but the lesson starts young). It is a form of service which is a big part of the scouting ethos. For this reason we expect every family to participate in at least one fundraising activity a year, which could be as simple as a 1-2 hour shift helping at the Bunnings BBQ.
